Good places to buy kitchen cabinets?

custom cabinets

I am beginning the rehab of a house and would like to completely redo the kitchen. I would like to spend the money to install contemporary looking cabinets with a nice countertop. Where should I go to purchase cabinets? I don’t think I will need custom cabinets, I think the standard will work. Would you look at the smaller stores or does Lowes and Home Depot usually win hand down?

Lowes/Home Depot are great places. I would try to check out your local stores though. Sometimes mom/pop stores have great prices and the service is a lot better. I would also check out believe it or not IKEA if you are close to one. My friend had her kitchen cabinets done with IKEA and at first I was skeptical considering that IKEA usually equals cheap and shotty but they look great and haven’t fallen down yet and its been a year!

Home Depot has a nice medium priced line called Mills Pride (http://www.millspride.com/ that is very nice. The folks at Home Depot are really good about helping you with picking out the cabinets and they will do the complete design for free. Also, Lowes has a similar program. They are both hard to beat. I’ve rehabed over a hundred kitchens.

I would check your local yellow pages to see if your area has any architectual salvage places, or if Habitat for Humanity has a re-sale store. You can find outstanding bargains for cabinet sets. We have a local company now that goes in and deconstructs old houses instead of just demolishing them. I got an eight foot long laminate counter top for less than $1.25 a foot. Even if you find different styles of cabinets for upper and lower, a bit of sanding then a single stain or paint will unify them. Good luck!
