How will black granite countertops look with very dark cherry cabinets?
Craig G
We like a very clean, simple look, but are trying to get the wow factor out of the custom cabinets we are having built. The appliances are stainless still and the faucet is going to be brushed nickel. The floor in the kitchen will be a medium color wood. There are 6 windows in the kitchen, so the kitchen getting dark will not be a problem. Any help if this will look good or any other ideas of a different color granite would help.

It’s going to be amazing. Mind you, I would go with a brushed stainless steel.

A black granite always works well with cherry cabinets. This is close to the same design scheme I have in my home, and I absolutly adore it. You’re also being smart with putting in so many windows. That’s the only complaint I have about ours. We didn’t put in enough, so sometimes it can seem very dark.

There’s no doubt about it it will look beautiful. But the slightest darkness will make the kitchen look smaller. It happened to me. The other important factor in this, would be the color of the the walls, to make the cabinets stand out. I got a light green color, with a mirror backsplash. A stainless steel backsplash is also conciderable, but you also have to worry about the cleaning.

It would look great. But consider these facts:
-The kitchen must be large with lots of outdoor light
-The backsplash must be a coordinating light shade
-Need lots of under cabinet lighting.

wow!! that would be gorgeous. i love it….. can i come live with you? just make sure you have good lighting, i.e… under cabinet lights … stuff like that, no matter how many windows you have you always end up with a dark corner or wall… which way the windows face.. outside trees and buildings are all possible light blockers. But definitely black/cherry and stainless is a wonderfully classic combination that will look beautiful and sophisticated for years to come, your going with a timeless classic…. always a good choice. btw… what color are the walls? just curious
congrats, and good luck!

From experience, I can suggest staying away from black granite unless you like to dust daily. It drove me completely nuts. There was dust on the counters every day. The only time they look good is when they are polished! Even if you wipe a spill with a towel, you have to polish the spot or you can see the smear. Go with a neutral color. You’ll be a lot happier in the long run!

I would not do a black granite with dark cabinets. You should chose something that is a bit brighter so your cabinets and countertops stand out one from the other. There are great selections and I would also check out a new product called Sile Stone. It’s great and they have gorgeous colors! Good luck with your remodel!

I am a contractor specializing in luxury homes and i have seen this combo a hundred times and it looks great, keep in mind that the cherry will darlen considerably over time …not to worry it will look even better,then…..if you you are concerned about things being too dark …they wont …but if it bugs you ,you can fix the issue by adding some brushed nickel pulls to your cabinetry, stick with the black granite maybe with silver or gold flecks to it,and do not go with silestone ,every home owner who we have had it put infor hates it as it is not a durable as granite,it burns if you put a hot pot on ot , it shows knife marks if you cut on it etc. granite looks better and is much more user friendly.
