Granite Countertops?
Staci K
We are looking at granite countertops and have had a couple people tell us that we should steer away from black or dark colored granite because water marks and smears are more prevalent than on lighter colors. Is this true? Any other recomendations? Thanks!

Nope, i have black granite counter tops at my house and it doesn’t show up at all. Besides if you keep it clean you shouldn’t have problems with watermarks. Go with the color you like.

If this is question is about a kitchen….I would go with a granite section large enough to make candy. A few years ago Color Tile had tiles that where a dark green/black/gray river rock look…..it’s worth looking into. Granite would be the perfect accent.

I have solid granite worktops (black) but sorry to say yes it does show up watermarks, not so much smears, but mine is a matt/dull worktop, so I don’t know if a highly polished one makes a difference?? but whatever, it still looks great.. I would recommend whatever colour you choose.. x

No definitely not true.
I’ve fitted a few kitchens recently with black and lighter brown granite and it’s easy to keep clean.
TBH there’s no better surface for a kitchen and gives a kitchen an instant WoW! factor . The cost is coming down all the time.
One bit of advice,,,,,,,,,don’t buy ultra cheap granite from supply only firms. Buy local and get them to fit.
Also have them fit the little granite upstand against the wall, between wall and worktop.
The last kitchen I fitted had 2 nice features. One was a Stainless Steel Belfast sink in the utility area which looked fantastic with the granite cut around it.
The other was a granite breakfast bar with a radius cut on the protruding end of the breakfast bar. This looked awesome and was really practical.

We also have Uba Tuba. Since it is so shiny, and reflective, you do indeed have to keep it cleaner than, say, Corian. Many new granite counter people are told “Invest in a paper towel company”. It’s true. However, wouldn’t you rather be able to see dirt on your counter? Of course! You should want to keep it very clean, and granite helps you by revealing areas not quite clean.

The only thing about black granite that people generally dont like are the seams. Its hard to hide the seams opposed to vibrant colors or granite with a lot of designs.

Correct me please if I am wrong. I don’t have Granite counter tops. But have thought of it. I also found out that alot of people are going for countertops made from concrete that ends up looking alot like Granite. And it ends up being alot cheaper. But I also don’t know how you take care of it either.
